Lessons from the Book of Jeremiah

A Verse I Have Held Onto

Over the past few months, I have often returned to Jeremiah 29:11:

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

It reminded me that He is a God of hope, a God who plants dreams in our hearts, and a God who invites us to partner with Him as those dreams grow and unfold in His timing.

The Context Behind the Promise

But as I read through the whole chapter of Jeremiah 29, God drew my attention to its context.

Before God spoke these words of hope, the people of Israel were living in exile. They were experiencing the consequences of years of disobedience and rebellion. They had turned away from God, yet God had not turned away from them.

That realization touched my heart deeply.

A Prophet Called by God

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." (Jeremiah 1:5)

Jeremiah was called to deliver difficult messages to God's people. He warned them repeatedly to return to the Lord. He pleaded with them to turn from their sin and come back to the God who loved them.

God's Relentless Love

What stands out throughout Jeremiah is not simply God's justice, but His relentless love.

Even after Israel's failures, God continued to pursue them. Even after they wandered, He continued to call them back. Even in exile, He gave them hope.

As I reflected on this, I was reminded that God's character never changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His love is not dependent on our performance. His faithfulness is not cancelled by our failures.

Whether we find ourselves in a season of suffering, uncertainty, disappointment, or even one in which we recognize that we have wandered away from God, His invitation remains the same:

Return to Me.

The Invitation to Return

That invitation is found in the verses that follow Jeremiah 29:11:

"Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you," declares the Lord.

(Jeremiah 29:12-14)

What a beautiful promise.

The God who gives hope is also the God who welcomes us home.

The God who forgives is also the God who restores hearts.

The God who promises a future is also the God who invites us into a relationship with Him.

Finding Hope in His Presence

No matter where you are today, whether you are walking through a storm, carrying regret, facing uncertainty, or simply feeling weary, know that God has not abandoned you.

Come to Him.

Lay your burdens at His feet, just as Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and listened to His words.

Invite the Holy Spirit to guide and counsel you.

Seek Him with all your heart.

The promise remains: when we seek Him, we will find Him.

And there, in His presence, we discover what Israel discovered long ago, that our greatest hope is not found in changed circumstances, but in the God who never stops calling His children home.

Blessings,
