It's been a little bit more than three weeks now, that all of a sudden and from nowhere, the coronavirus pandemic brought the government to close schools, day cares, universities, churches, restaurants and many more ... Parents have been 'forced' to take a leave to stay with the kids - Companies have been working hard to give to their employees all the accesses needed to send them to work from home - Many businesses and companies closed and little by little it seems that life as we knew it, just stopped!
If you are living in Montreal, breaking news three times a day is not a surprise anymore - it's a new routine- and the government is doing all they can to have people STAY HOME! Don't wander out, except for grocery and a few other things.
COVID-19 has brought a big brutal stop in our lives, and one of the things we are being asked to do to help flatten the curve, is to stay home and maintain social distance. In Psalms 46:10 (NIV) it says “Be still, and know that I am God” and I am sure, many of us are enjoying the pause, the break from the never ending busyness and all the rushing and running around, but this new way of life is becoming harder on us. Parents are having a hard trying to keep the kids busy while working remotely and might have feelings of guilt in the midst of this new routine. We might feel unqualified being a parent and a teacher at the same time. We might feel unqualified because we are not only the parent but we are the teacher, the coach, the counsellor, the friend, the classmate, all at the same time.
Even if life is different, and requires a lot of reshaping of our routines, I believe it is a blessing. There is a reason why God is allowing this and in His great love and concern, He is giving us the opportunity to educate our children. I am not saying that we were not doing a good job before COVID, but I think God is using this situation to remind parents that the most important lessons their kids need to learn needs to be taught at home - the family school of life.
Yes, it is definitely a good thing for our children to have an academic education, and when the situation will be good for them to resume school, they will have to go back. But right now, God is giving us parents, the time to reflect on our role in our kids' lives. How invested we are in our family life? How much time are we giving to each of our kids? How much can we honestly say we are a model, a guide and a mentor to our kids?
The world has been teaching a lot of things to our kids, and now it is time for us to realize that the most important lesson they need to learn is from God through us. It is our role, to lead them in what God has planned for them.
Being a model will bring us to humble ourselves before God asking to be changed in His image. The more we are like Him, the more we will talk and act like Him. Let us take this time given to us, and make the most of it, and go back to what God really wants for our family.
In Romans 12:2 is says 'Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.'
I now encourage you friends, to seek God and let Him reveal himself to you about the steps you need to take. Families are important to God, and home is where life begins.
